The award recognizes two directors each year, one from Western Kentucky, the other from Eastern Kentucky, who stand out above the rest and work hard for their communities to have a quality service for their citizens.

“This award comes back as a reflection on our EMS services at both Henderson and Union Counties,” said Winstead. Noting there are about 44 members of the team at both locations, he said, ““We are only as good as our employees. It’s not just me, but all who take care of our community members as we should.”

Winstead began his career in EMS early. After becoming certified as an EMT in 1982 at age 18, he went on to become a Paramedic in 1991. “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “As a child, our home in Nebo burned to the ground. That’s when I first became interested in becoming a firefighter and paramedic.”

Winstead became EMS Director for hospital-based ambulance services in Union County in 2010 and added the responsibility for Henderson County in 2016. His affiliation with Methodist Health goes back to 1994 when he began serving as EMS Director for Webster County ambulance services.
