SUCCESS STORY: Dr. Paul Moore is walking easy again, thanks to minimally invasive hip replacement surgery

Dr. Paul Moore, a Family Practice physician with Methodist Family Medicine, has experienced the doctor-patient relationship from both sides, and is walking a lot easier because of it. “I was having a lot of pain in my left hip. It had been getting worse for several months, to the point that one day I had to leave my office in a wheelchair,” he explained.

At that point, he sought advice from Dr. Dennis Beck, a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with Orthopaedic Associates, who ordered an X-ray and confirmed he needed a hip replacement. Minimally invasive anterior total hip replacement surgery was scheduled at Methodist Health for April 19, 2018.

Dr. Beck is one of only three surgeons in the area performing anterior hip replacement and is the Department Chair of Physical Medicine at Methodist Health. He explained, “While traditional surgery involves an eight to 12-inch incision on the side or back of the leg, the anterior procedure uses a three to six inch incision on the front of the leg.

“Its advantages include less post-operative pain, faster recovery, more rapid stability of the hip since the muscles are not disrupted during the procedure, less scarring since there is a smaller incision, and a shorter hospital stay.”

Dr. Moore, who has been a full-time member of Methodist Health’s Medical Staff since 1984, was able to return to seeing his patients part-time in four weeks and was back full-time in six weeks. “During my two night stay in the Hospital,” he said, “I received excellent care. I started out with physical therapy three times a week at Methodist Health, and then twice a week before I was released to continue my exercises at home.

“I am very appreciative to Dr. Beck and everyone involved in my Hospital stay. The therapy was not painful and I found the exercises very easy to do. I’m back to doing everything I did prior to the surgery.”

As part of a recent partnership between Methodist Health and Orthopaedic Associates, Dr. Beck provides services to patients of Henderson and surrounding communities at Methodist Health. He specializes in general orthopaedics and total joint replacement.

Orthopaedic Associates has been committed to Western Kentucky since opening an office on Highway 60 at 340 Starlite Drive in 2011. The office offers diagnostic imaging, physical therapy, casting and durable medical equipment, plus scheduled and urgent care patient visits five days a week. They are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
