Joy Carrier, Spirit of Excellence, February 2018

Joy Carrier, RN, BSN, MSN, Intensive Care Unit, began her career with Methodist Health on March 29, 2004, as an ICU Assistant. She left in July 2006 to study nursing at Henderson Community College and returned in May 2008 as a Nurse Extern. She completed her Associate’s Degree in Nursing in 2009 and in 2014 earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Walden University.

Carrier, who grew up in Sturgis and is a 1999 Union County High School graduate, now lives in Corydon. She also earned a Master of Science in 2017 from Walden University to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. She is now licensed and works on a PRN basis at First Care Clinics in Henderson in addition to working full-time in the ICU at Methodist Health. Although the majority of her career has been spent in the ICU, she worked one year in the Recovery Room and three years in the Infusion area.

The favorite part of her job is talking with patients and trying to make their time in the Hospital a little easier. She noted she originally wanted to be a heart surgeon but ended up studying nursing instead. “I knew I wouldn’t stop at an Associate Degree,” Carrier said, “Earning a Doctorate is still not out of the question.”

Carrier said the Spirit of Excellence award couldn’t have come at a better time. “It was a nice surprise!”

COMMENTS FROM HER NOMINATOR

“Joy has phenomenal knowledge and experience and it shows with each patient she has under her care.”

“She shows such amazing compassion with each patient. Her patients have made it a point to let me know how glad they are to have her taking care of them during their stay. She makes sure they are well taken care of to the best of her abilities. I have heard no complaints, just words of praise.”

“She communicates with patients and staff very well. Even in the most stressful situations, she knows how to stay in control. I look forward to working with her every day because I know she is going to be a joy.”
