World Health Organization (WHO) has designated Thursday, May 31 as
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). The theme of WNTD 2018 is “Tobacco and Heart Disease.”
Prevention and Wellness Services will mark WNTD with fun activities for both adults and children from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Elm Street lobby at Methodist Hospital and in the
front lobby at Methodist Hospital Union County. All are invited to attend
to pick up literature about upcoming smoking cessation classes and other
programs. Refreshments will be served.
Tobacco use is a known and important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases
(CVD), including coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular
disease. According to WHO, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause
of death worldwide. Active and passive smoking contributes to 12% of all
heart disease deaths.
