By Talia NeSmith, MD, Methodist Hospital
During an inpatient stay at Methodist Hospital, you may receive care from
one of our highly skilled and experienced Hospital physicians. Our Hospitalist
Care Team specializes in caring for patients while they are recovering
in the Hospital and supervises a patient’s inpatient care, including
diagnostic testing, therapeutic treatments and medication regimens. Each
patient’s primary care physician works closely with the Hospitalist
Care Team to coordinate care once a patient is discharged from the Hospital.
Why would a Hospitalist care for me instead of my primary care physician (PCP)?
The skills required for office practice and hospital practice have dramatically
changed over the last several years. Your PCP typically spends the majority
of their time in the clinic environment. By focusing on the skills needed
for hospital care, our Hospitalists provide excellent, up-to-date medical
treatment that PCPs and specialists want their patients to receive in
the Hospital. Being cared for by Hospitalists -- also referred to as inpatient
physicians -- allows PCPs to focus their full attention on providing the
very best care for you in the office setting.
Will the Hospitalist be communicating with my PCP?
Yes, during any Hospital stay, our Hospitalists partner with PCPs, keeping
them informed of any important events. They also consult with specialists
as needed to ensure you are receiving the absolute best care possible.
What are the benefits to me?
The Hospitalists at Methodist Hospital are physician specialists with
extensive training and hospital experience in caring for severely ill
or injured patients. They provide quality inpatient care to patients,
24 hours a day, seven days a week. Since Hospitalists are available around
the clock, decisions are made quickly. Treatments can be modified, test
results are processed rapidly and follow-up care is timely. This reduces
medical complications, shortens Hospital stays and lower costs.
