Methodist Hospital

Education & Research

Welcome
The Education and Research Department at Methodist Hospital is committed to its employees, patients and the tri-county communities that it serves through the provision of departmental resources and the support of pedagogical teaching strategies (style of instruction) that promote both individual and aggregate learning. All education is based upon evidence-based practice medicine and standards of care through interdisciplinary and interdepartmental education. The holistic concepts of mental, physical and spiritual well-being are reflected in the departments teaching philosophy that compliments Methodists mission and tradition.

Patient education is a collaborative effort among physicians, and all healthcare providers which promote positive patient outcomes and quality patient care delivery. The department provides and assists healthcare educators in the development of teaching designs to facilitate education and encourage patient self-care post hospitalization.

The department embraces the educational needs of the communities it serves through the provision of educational offerings expressed by community leaders and organizations. Under these circumstances, focus is placed on the prevention of illness and disease, health issue awareness and lifestyle management.

Employees are encouraged to continue formal education, achieve specialty certifications, and engage in professional activities that promote personal growth and development. The department believes that all employees present special talents and needs in the workplace. As a result, educational programs are designed around employee and leadership input.

It is important for nurses to stay abreast of current practices in nursing research in order to ensure that scientific principles are incorporated into practice as opposed to tradition, routine, and dated literature that pose a threat to desired patient outcomes. Organizational activities intentionally focused on the integration of nursing research into practice are necessary to enable nurses to make informed decisions and empower nurses to make admirable changes in daily practices. Staff nurses will have ample opportunities to participate in research activities and be a research team nurse.

If you are looking for a workplace that cares about its patients, communities, and employees, Methodist is right for you. I have grown up in this hospital and the people here are like family to me. I have acquired a Master of Science in Nursing since my initial employment in 1983 and most recently achieved my Doctor of Nursing Practice. The hospital has been supportive of me in my endeavors and I personally am committed to the enrichment of your professional life which, in turn, enriches the lives of our patients and communities!

Sincerely,
Cathy O'Nan, DNP, RN
